Evolution SmartServer is a high performance computer with 497GB (SmartServer-M) or 994GB (SMartServer-L) of RAID5 high speed, high capacity, hot swap redundant disk and gigabit high speed networking. The SmartServer is set up for the desired number of cameras, viewing stations, and storage capacity. Each SmartServer can record up to 16 SmartCams at an average data rate of 5mpbs each. Multiple SmartServers can be connected in a Evolution system network to support even more cameras and storage capacity.

SmartServer is the core of the SmartCam Evolution system. It is the database server for the configuration system. The configuration system is an easy to use database system with a web front end that allows authorized users to configure and manage the system from any web browser. Using the configuration web pages, the system installer/administrator can add and configure SmartCams, SmartViewers and other peripheral  devices, configure the hard disk storage parameters and manage users to the system. The configuration system allows the administrator to set up events and connect them to devices such as motion sensors and access control systems. These events are recorded in the event database and can be reviewed and controlled in the SmartViewer.

Video playback from the SmartServer hard disk recorder can synchronized with events such as motion or access to a controlled area. Also, medium and long term video storage can be optimized to save only video connected with events. Video and database data is stored on an internal RAID5 IDE hard disk array. This provides the maximum possible power and flexibility in a hard disk storage system. RAID5 protects the data from the failure of one disk and provides the very high data rates needed for multichannel video recording. IDE RAID provides highest capacity and lowest cost compared to expensive SCSI RAID systems often used in similar applications.

SmartServer includes a DVD-R for data backup to DVD ROM. SmartServer also integrates directly with a DVD-R 200 disk DVD jukebox for permanent archiving of video and database data. (Available in 1Q 2003).
